You Can’t Always Control Them (And That’s Okay)

You Can’t Always Control Them (And That’s Okay)

Hey Darlings,

Let’s talk about a classic phrase we’ve all heard a million times: "You can't control how other people act, you can only control how you respond."

For the longest time, I hated hearing that. To me, it sounded like code for suppress your feelings, take the high road, pretend you aren't hurt, and move on. It felt like being told to swallow your valid anger just to keep the peace.

But that is not what real emotional control means.

Controlling your response isn't about hiding your emotions or pretending you are a robot. It’s about giving yourself permission to feel the full weight of what happened without letting it destroy your inner peace.

How to Process It When Life Gets Messy:

1. Acknowledge the Emotion out loud: Say to yourself, "I am angry," "I am hurt," or "I am deeply disappointed." Name the feeling without judgment.

2. Identify the Trigger: Why do you feel this way? "Because they disrespected my boundary," or "Because that situation was unfair."

3. Validate Yourself: Tell yourself, "It is completely okay that I feel this way. Even if someone else thinks I'm overreacting, or even if I think I’m overreacting my feelings are real to me." Emotions are how our brain protect itself and tells us something is wrong or I don’t feel safe , don’t minimize or dismiss them even if they seem like an overreaction.

4. Choose Your Action: Once you've allowed the emotion to pass through your body, then you decide what to do next. Do you set a firm boundary? Do you walk away? Do you take a moment to breathe before replying?

You don't have to suppress a single thing. Feel your feelings deeply, give yourself space to process them, and then keep stepping forward in your power. You hold the steering wheel to your life, Darling—don't hand it over to someone else's bad behavior.
